Matt Dufty Departs the Wire

After an exhilarating three-and-a-half-year rollercoaster ride with the Warrington Wolves, Aussie full-back Matt Dufty and the club have decided to amicably go their separate ways. This closes a chapter packed with electrifying attacks, record-smashing runs, and unforgettable highlights at the Halliwell Jones Stadium.

Dufty's Arrival and Key Game 2022

Dufty touched down in England in July 2022, swapping the NRL’s Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs for a new adventure, having starred previously with St George Illawarra and the Bulldogs. His grand entrance with the Wolves came in Round 21 against Huddersfield, though it was a bumpy start with both a loss and a foot injury thrown into the mix.

But hold onto your hats—he quickly made headlines later that season! With a dazzling display, he scored four tries in a nail-biting 38-36 showdown against Huddersfield, proving his knack for electrifying gameplay.

Key performances and impact

With Sam Burgess at the helm, Dufty blossomed into a Super League superstar:

In 2023, he dazzled with 14 tries over 28 games, guiding Warrington to the play-offs and facing off in their knock-out bout with St Helens.

The 2024 season marked his peak. Dufty crossed the line an impressive 17 times, led the entire Super League in metres gained, and was ranked fourth in the league’s try scoring. His outstanding form earned him a place on the Man of Steel shortlist — a rare honour for a Wolves player — and he was named at full-back in the Super League Dream Team.

Dufty enjoyed standout individual games in 2024, including a hat-trick against London and another treble in the Magic Weekend victory over Leeds Rhinos, thrilling the Wire faithful.

Statistics & records

Across his Warrington stint, Dufty amassed:

88 appearances

47 tries

Leading Super League in metres gained in 2024

Regular place on league attacking and statistical leaderboards

His dynamic running and attacking threat made him one of the most exciting players in the competition and a fan favourite at the Wire.

The final chapter & closing statement

Dufty’s 2025 season was like a rollercoaster with a few unexpected loops! His try count and overall pizzazz didn’t quite match the 2024 fireworks, and he found himself juggling bench and field time more than he'd like. There were even a couple of dramatic exits due to disciplinary blunders.

Fast forward to January 2026, and both Warrington and Dufty decided to call it quits on the contract a year early. The reason? A tiny new teammate is about to join the squad—Dufty and his partner are expecting their first little one! The Reality? Dufty cost benefit analysis flipped both on and off the field.

Reflecting on his time in England, Dufty said:

“I’d like to thank all the players, staff, the board and especially the fans for making Warrington my home for the last three-and-a-half -years. Me and my partner have absolutely loved our time here, with so many amazing memories on and off the field. I wish the team all the best for this season.”
