Can the Airlie Birds fly once more in Super League?

The year 2024 shall be etched in the annals of MKM Stadium as a whimsical comedy of errors, akin to treasures collected from the shelves of a Blockbuster (a nod to the parents). It would find its place amongst the beloved classics like Airplane, Austin Powers, and American Pie. The lingering question remains: what sequel awaits us in 2025?

Amidst the clamour of spirited neighbours riding the tide of triumph in 2024 with a Grand Final appearance, supporters of FC must find the current status quo a challenging saga to navigate. They felt 'Down, Down, Deeper and Down,' while just down the road, the Robins were basking in a 'Little Respect' and perhaps 'Rocking all over the World.' New CEO Richie Myler, along with the dedicated team at FC, is acutely aware that the loyal faithful will yearn for a flourishing 2025 as a just reward for their unwavering devotion and commitment to the the club.

With the arrival of John Cartwright, a grand game of musical chairs unfolds, witnessing the departure of 10 players and the welcome of 6, with perhaps one significant signing yet to grace the roster, filling the void left by Jordan Abdull, who was both signed and released during the winter's chill. Hull FC is fortunate to nurture an array of promising talent emerging from their revered academy, featuring the likes of Moy, Litten, Charles, Balmforth, and the dynamic Kemp twins. In light of this, it becomes abundantly clear that Cartwright has strategically gathered seasoned players to support the growth of their youth, ensuring an immediate impact in the present moment. Let's hear from the man at the helm:

Cue the playful banter, as some jesting commentators suggest this squad resembles the Leigh Leopards, with a remarkable five players embarking on a journey over the Pennines in the past year. The crown jewel of their acquisitions from the Leythers is none other than Challenge Cup-winning captain John Asiata. Arguably one of the finest loose forwards in the realm, Asiata wields the ball with finesse as a formidable 13, wreaking havoc on defences with his powerful strides, crafting opportunities for his backs on the flanks or his fellow forwards. Should Asiata forge a connection with Herman Ese'Ese similar to the one he shared with Tom Amone, the spectacle that follows is bound to be nothing short of extraordinary. Let's celebrate the man himself by watching some highlights:

Zac Hardaker and Oliver Holmes are esteemed warriors of the Super League, yet which incarnations will grace FC? Hardaker, when in form, is a formidable force, as showcased in his Man of the Match performance during last year's Magic Weekend against the Salford Red Devils. With two Challenge Cup titles, three Grand Finals, and a dual selection as a Super League Dream Team member, Hardaker bestows upon the team a treasure trove of experience and insight into the game.

Oliver Holmes, a second-row player celebrated for his remarkable tenure with the Castleford Tigers, where he devoted more than ten years to the club. Although he narrowly missed a Dream Team selection in 2021, where his skills were on full display, Holmes has encountered difficulties since then. He had a disappointing season with Warrington in 2022, followed by just six appearances for the Leopards last season. Nevertheless, he significantly contributed to their journey to the Challenge Cup final the previous year, scoring a thrilling try against St Helens in the semi-finals.

Holmes adds significant depth to FC's squad, and Super League Raw harbours hopes that he will rediscover the brilliance that once made him one of the league’s finest second rowers in 2021, challenging the likes of Jordan Lane and Jed Cartwright for prominence.

At the age of 35, Jordan Rapana stands as a revered figure among the NRL backs of his era, boasting an impressive 219 appearances and 111 tries while donning the colours of the Gold Coast Titans and the Canberra Raiders. He etched his name in history by setting the record for the most tries in a single season at Canberra, achieving an astounding 23 touchdowns in 2016—a year that saw the Raiders rise to a commendable second-place finish. This seasoned back, adept at manoeuvring between fullback, wing, and centre, commenced his professional journey with the Gold Coast Titans in the NRL in 2008 where John Cartwright reigned as the Head Coach. Here is Jordan touching down for Canberra in last year.

Aiden Sezer returns to Super League from West Tigers having represented the Huddersfield Giants and the Leeds Rhinos previously in the Northern hemisphere. It was announced in January that Sezer would be made captain for the 2025 season. He spoke exclusively to Hull FC on their YouTube channel.

It is essential that Sezer shines in 2025, embodying the honour of guiding this illustrious club week after week. Perhaps donning the captain's armband will ignite within him the brilliance of performance he is destined to achieve.

Cade Cust and Amir Borough have arrived from the Salford Red Devils. Cade Cust, still seeking his rhythm in the Super League since his arrival at Wigan Warriors in 2022, faced interruptions from injuries that marred his journey, while Bevan French overshadowed him during his illustrious Man of Steel year in 2023. The shadows of injury lingered, limiting him to just 15 appearances last season for the Red Devils, with a solitary try marking his efforts in the Round 1 defeat against the Leeds Rhinos. With the coveted number 6 shirt now available, a glimmer of opportunity may shine upon him in the early rounds. Whispers in the wind hint that he might also explore a role in the hooking position this season. However, with Charles and Balmforth fiercely contesting those coveted spots, Cade will find himself navigating a challenging path ahead.

Amir Borough has been graced with the coveted number 9 jersey for 2025. The Salford Red Devils, stricken with sorrow at his departure, recognize his potential to ascend as one of the finest 9's in the league, a sentiment echoed for the talented Denive Balmforth. FC fans are alight with anticipation as these two stars emerge, reminiscent of the dynamic Litten and Parcell duo at KR from recent seasons, promising to infuse the squad with even more vibrant energy.

If the mere sight of the formidable Herman Ese'Ese reignites your enthusiasm this season, then as the legendary Stone Cold Steve Austin would proclaim, "Give me a hell yeah!" Last term, Ese'Ese was the crown jewel of our team of the year, and it seems a heist of epic proportions occurred, akin to the Oceans 11 caper, when he was overlooked for the official dream team. This titan was nothing short of spectacular in both attack and defence, regardless of the chaos that surrounded him. The statistics sing his praises: 2,623 meters from 363 carries, 124 Tackle Busts, 61 Offloads, 638 Tackles, 1 Try, and 3 Assists. If Godzilla were to catch a glimpse of this imposing specimen, he'd surely retreat to the abyss rather than confront the might of big Herman! Time to see beast mode at its best!

Very well written Dave just feel FC side is still ABIT mis matched and don't have much of an identity. On paper they look a half decent squad but getting them playing together is another challenge in its self. Still think they look light in the pack and lack ABIT of pace

Hull FC could be a wild card this year, who knows with the talent they have acquired what they could do. Take them for granted at your peril
