It is truly astounding to reflect that it has been since 2017 when Danny McGuire and the late, great Rob Burrow hoisted the Super League trophy aloft for the Leeds Rhinos. While a Challenge Cup victory in 2020 and a Grand Final appearance in 2022, emerging from an unexpected 5th place, have gifted some cherished moments to the Rhinos faithful, it remains clear that the team has experienced a decline from the shining era of 2007-2017. So, the question lingers: can the Rhinos once more rise to contend with the elite of the Super League in 2025?

While yesterday is indeed a chapter of history, we must not overlook that the Rhinos concluded their journey in 8th place last season, enhanced by the arrival of Brodie Croft and Andy Ackers from the Salford Red Devils, marking a rare transfer fee in our sport. The bare minimum expectation was to grace the playoffs; however, what unfolded was the unveiling of a new sporting director, Ian Blease, alongside the fresh leadership of head coach Brad Arthur, stepping in for Rohan Smith—the only significant revelations from Headingley last season.
With this in mind, recruitment would be the crucial spell to not only secure a place in the playoffs but, more importantly, to reach the Grand Final. As debated on 'Super League Raw Weekly,' the team shared their apprehensions regarding Maika Sivo and Keenan Palasia, both bearing the weight of significant past injuries—the latter having endured three knee reconstructions, still at the youthful age of 28. Listen closely to the team's insights through this link (recorded prior to the Sivo injury):
With heavy hearts, it is indeed a profound disappointment that Maika Sivo has encountered a season-ending ACL injury before a ball has been passed in anger. Yet, a silver lining graces the Rhinos, as they now possess the chance to recruit a replacement, having secured dispensation for 2025. In a flourish of nostalgia, Ryan Hall returns to his homeland for one final grand performance, boasting an impressive try-scoring record of an average of 2/3 games in Super League—an undeniable enhancement over David Fusitu'a, who managed to cross the line a mere 18 times over three seasons with the Rhinos. Let's take a moment to celebrate the all time Super League try scoring sensation, Ryan Hall.
In Connor Jenkins Leeds have recruited undoubted potential, a talented youngster who came through the Newcastle Knights development programme, he was originally a centre due his speed, winning a national title for 200m. However, a move to the forwards followed as he grew into his 6’4” height. And then there is this man!
Jake on his day is one of the most gifted talents in Super League as Leeds Rhinos know all to well, who can forget the night he single headedly destroyed them at Headingley when representing Hull FC in Round 5 of the 2022 season.
Which incarnation of Jake Connor graces the Rhinos could wield considerable influence over their season's destiny. As we ponder the comings and goings at this juncture, discerning whether the Rhinos are better fortified for 2025 remains elusive. Fortunately, the Leeds Rhinos possess an abundance of remarkable talent already inscribed on their roster. Harry Newman and Andy Ackers stand poised as two of the league's premier players in their respective roles. Yet, their performances last season fell short of their true potential with Ackers now crucial in light of Jarrod O'Connor being out with an MCL for most of the season. If they can shine alongside the formidable Ash Handley and the dynamic Brodie Croft consistently, Leeds will wield the firepower needed to conquer territory and maintain their hold on it. Moreover, last year’s top tackle buster, Lachie Miller, emboldened by a year of experience, aims to elevate his game beyond an impressive tally of 7 tries, 17 assists, 14 clean breaks, and a staggering 3,490 meters from 489 carries this season.
Here at Super League Raw we would place the Rhinos in the 'Who knows!" category when deciding their chances in 2025. There's no doubt they'll be contenders for at least a playoff spot, but will they manage to secure any silverware? The Challenge Cup seems to be their most promising opportunity, similar to many teams in the Super League looking for something to celebrate at the end of the season. As for the League Leaders' Shield, that's a definite no! Regarding the Grand Final, if any team in the Super League era has pulled off surprising victories from lower positions to emerge triumphantly at Old Trafford in October, it’s undoubtedly the Rhinos, they couldn't, could they?
